How to find mutual aid organizations near you
“How do I get involved?”
How often do we think this after some sort of tragedy or widespread social issue? Without a clear path forward, many people’s desire to get involved falls by the wayside. Here are a few ways you can quickly find a good way to plug in and support mutual aid near you, before other things in life distract you.
- Google “mutual aid” and your location. I know this one seems simple, but you may be surprised at the number of people who don’t do this. You may find that you come up with things like instagrams and other social media instead of more official websites. Don’t be deterred. Many mutual aid organizations arr run by just a few people and don’t have much official online presence. But remember; the person running them is a human, just like you.
- Check out the Mutual Aid Hub to see if any organizations are listed near you..
- Google the social cause you’re interested in, the keywords “get involved” and your area. That can help you find different organizations that area doing work around you, and even if they aren’t mutual aid efforts, they may lead you to some.
When you find something you’re interested in participating in, see how you can get involved. Do they have an online space you can join? An event you can attend? It can feel scary to take this first step, but you’ll need to step outside your comfort zone to create the world you want to live in! See if you can get a friend to go with you, if there’s an in-person event. If there’s something online, consider joining and giving yourself permission not to speak if you don’t feel comfortable. You may be surprised with how it goes!
We all start somewhere. Put one foot in front of the other, and you’ll find yourself in a whole new world working side by side with people who want to create a better world.
