Riles Reads: Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown
Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown took my breathe away and had me shouting at the page "yes, yes" repeatedly. It's part guidebook for organizing strategies, part strategies for navigating and leading change within yourself, your communities, part creative envisioning of a radical future that prioritizes wellness, wholeness, and happiness.
"Emergent strategies are ways for humans to practice complexity and grow the future through relatively simple interactions." brown reminds us of how the way we act internally will be replicated in our lives, in our societies, in our movements. Through small, simple changes we can cause ripples that send out waves into the future. So how can we start to shift in small ways to align with the radical future we envision?
If you're a current or aspiring community organizer, this book is for you. It is full of ideas and visions for ways to work together to create change. And if you aren't yet active shaping change in the world, maybe you're just changing yourself -- even then, there are wisdoms here for you. Because after all, we have to transform ourselves to transform the world.
We will be reading this book together for the August 2021 meeting of the Soft Heart Book Club, and I encourage you to read it for yourself or join the group and chat about it with us. (Even after the meeting you can hang out in the Discord space to talk books, change, and creating the world we want to see.)
Thank you for being here 👋 I'm an immigrant from the US, now at home in Barcelona, Spain.
I write, make art, and create spaces for us to to share thoughts, feelings, & opportunities to explore how to create the world we want to live in. Being human is hard, but we can make it easier for each other. I believe in us. 💜
